“During the 2024 Council, we presented the EATA Gold Medal Award and bid farewell to our long-standing and highly valued ethics advisor, Robin Hobbes. Robin was awarded this medal in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the TA community.
Robin has dedicated his professional life to teaching, supervising, and practicing psychotherapy and counseling. He has been involved in Transactional Analysis (TA) for 33 years, passing his clinical exams in 1985 and establishing a training program in Manchester in 1987. Over the years, he has authored numerous articles, conducted workshops at conferences, and delivered keynote presentations.
In terms of service to the TA community, Robin has held many roles, including ITAA TEW Coordinator, Chair, Secretary, and Chair of Ethics for ITA—now UKATA—as well as EATA Ethics Advisor from 2013 to 2023.
For me—and I believe for many others—he is one of the most principled and values-driven transactional analysts I know. Robin has supported and advised several EATA presidents (at least five, including myself), many officers, and countless members in an honest and always respectful way, regardless of the question or challenge. He sought solutions and options, informed himself thoroughly on every relevant matter, and offered advice that was both stimulating and never discounting.
Particularly for non-native English speakers, he helped summarize complex thoughts clearly and concisely in proper English—working with him was, in many ways, also an English lesson.
Robin has built connections with many officers and members, engaging in numerous meetings and rich discussions—not only about TA and ethics but also about music, opera, and culture. It has been, is, and will always be a pleasure to know him and to have him as an honorable and valued member of the TA community.
Congratulations on behalf of all of us!”

” I was surprised and touched that EATA awarded me a Gold Medal following my retirement from being the Ethics Advisor. I do think I did the job well enough … But Gold Medal ??? I’m not sure I merit it but serving EATA in the way I have over 11 years has deeply enriched my life in so many ways. I am left with gratitude to all those who engaged with me in all the different ways that they did over those 11 years. A Gold Medal makes me think of the Olympics but in truth it was nothing like the Olympics … No extreme sacrifice … no life of devotion to achieving a specific task … Just being with people, finding out about them, what matters to them and learning from them … And then a Gold Medal!
Thank you all … Robin”
