Promoting Integration, Diversity and Belonging with Models of TA at a Secondary School

My name is Christiane Dittmann (CTA -EDU), I am a trained high school teacher for the subjects of German language and literature and classical Greek teaching since 1993. In the year 2012 I became principal of our school with around 580 students in Aalen, a medium-sized city in Germany.

At our school, around 30% of the students have a migration background, a total of 29 nations are represented. Since the Ukraine war, we have also had an increasing number of students with little knowledge of German at the school.

As part of an Erasmus project “Schools of Belonging”, we are looking at how we can better value the diverse skills that students from different cultures bring to school. We also want to promote integration, diversity and belonging.

Using the theory and models of TA (particularly Trudy Newton), I ask the following questions:

• What factors influence the sense of belonging to our school of students and parents?

• What structures do we use to implement the findings at school?

• What have we already achieved so that students can feel like they belong with us?

• How can we further develop our school?

The Parent Ego State

The Parent ego state in the functional ego state model is viewed through the prism of the value principle as the primacy of our need to be valued as the fundamental social need. Experiences of using the value-based functional model in a psychotherapeutic context and working with couples are offered for discussion.

Lena Kornyeyeva, Ph.D., born in Ukraine, lives and works as a psychologist and couple therapist in Germany since 2006. Her scientific research was based on TA theory and contributed to the understanding of the authoritarian personality and roots of violence. Her book on couples therapy was published in Ukrainian and Russian.

ATAD in the Earthquake Zone

A TA project to support primary school teachers in the disaster zone

On February 6th, 2023, the Southeast of Turkey was rocked by two devasting earthquakes. An estimated 55,000 people lost their lives and millions were left homeless and traumatised.

ATAD, Eurasian Association of TA (Turkey), delivered a training to primary school teachers in the earthquake zone in the aftermath of the disaster. This presentation will talk about how the project came to life and helped these education professionals to develop and strengthen their interactions with school children, while preserving the boundaries of the pupil-teacher relationship.

Ş. Ebru Toksoy, PhD., CIIPTS, has over 33 years of experience in the preventive and rehabilitative areas of mental health. She continues her work as a psychotherapist, psychological counselor, researcher, trainer, and academic in Istanbul, Turkey. Specializing in psychological trauma and its rehabilitation, she is currently collaborating with national and international organizations to provide psychological support to the earthquake zone in Turkey following the February 2023 earthquakes.

Ebru is among the first generation in Turkey to receive training in Transactional Analysis. She is the president of the Eurasian Transactional Analysis Association. Additionally, she is a Certified International Integrative Psychotherapist, Trainer, and Supervisor. She gives lectures at Istanbul Bilgi University.

Aylin Çevik has more than 25 years of experience working as a counseling psychologist and educator with various organizations. She trained in psychodrama, Transactional Analysis, trauma therapy, and cognitive approaches. Her work focuses on a wide range of psychological issues, including trauma, the effects of chronic illnesses, communication difficulties, sexual identity, sexual disfunctions, and suicidal behaviour.
